July Class III Price

Today the USDA announced the July Class III price at $18.24/cwt. The July price is $2.01 lower than June and $3.14 lower than July 2007. July’s price brings the 2008 average price to $18.25, which is $1.39 higher than the same time period in 2007. In spite of the $2.01 drop in the Class III price from June, producers will not see much change in their milk checks. While the July Class III price declined, July Class I prices were set off the higher prices in June. As a result, gross farm milk prices will be about $1 per cwt higher in July than they were in June. Also, the PPD will be about a positive $1.40 for July.

Volatile Cheese Prices Through the Week
Wednesday’s barrel cheese price decline of $.28 per pound was a record. Thursday, the barrel price recovered some, adding back $.15 per pound. On Friday, barrel prices did not change, ending the week at $1.80. Block cheese was volatile as well, but did not decline as much as barrels on Wednesday. At the end of the week, blocks stood at $1.835, a $0.035 per pound difference from barrels. For the week, blocks declined by $0.2325 and barrels by $0.17. Stronger milk production, softer cheese demand and stable to higher cheese inventories, contributed to the cheese price changes this week.
